A Walk in the Garden

If you aren't into gardens, feel free to skip this post . . . just an update on the gardens for those who are curious!

Spring has sprung . . . or rather, summer temperatures are here!  No rains yet- for those of you that don't know Florida well, we have a loooong dry season- November to April.  During those months, it may rain once a month . . . our lakes are really low right now and the grass is dead-brown.  This month it should start raining a bit more (May) and in June we should get daily rainstorms.  That means lots of hand-watering of the plants!

I also have to grow everything in little boxes, since #1 it's not my hard and #2 the dirt here isn't dirt, it's sand!  So by growing in "boxes," I can make a nice mix of peat moss, sand and compost to grow plants in.

Cucumber (Japanese Climbing) box with bamboo tee-pee (made by Jeremiah)

Our first cucumber!  It didn't even make it inside, we ate it that fast!

The back side of the house- on the right are the cucumber, watermelon and sunflower boxes.  Plumbego is finally looking good, with special feeding & watering care.

To the left of the previous picture, is this pretty bed of flowers.  Makes me happy!

And if you continue to the left, are the rest of our veggies.  The box on the left is corn (not up yet), cotton, onions, rosemary and oregano.  The box on the right holds our tomatoes.  Behind is pumpkin and lemongrass (the giant grass thing).

And if you remember from last year, I re-did the whole front entrance to our house.  This year it got new flowers and some new ferns!

One picture from the weekend- we set up the playhouse on the laundry pad and had lots of fun!
